It’s the end of the year as we know it, and that means it’s time for us here at MMORPG.com to gather around and salute our picks for the best MMOs and RPGs of 2016, plus the ones we’re most anxious for in 2017. Read on for our Best of 2016 Awards!

Pokémon Go wins almost by default. Though its fanfare has waned in the resulting months since its launch, there’s little denying that Niantic’s AR MMO is a phenomenon. While there remain many issues we’d like to see fixed or features we want added (Turn-Based battles, PVP duels, etc), Pokémon Go is the sort of game that will drive a new wave of games in the mobile space. We expect many more mobile AR MMOs to come out in the next while, and we can’t wait to see in what ways they improve upon the groundwork laid by Pokémon Go.

Battlerite is technically in early access, but as many of you probably know we have a stance to consider EA titles “released” when they’re taking money and not wiping progress. Battlerite is doing both and it’s a good thing then that this spiritual successor to Bloodline Champions is so addictive and polished. Eschewing the tired three lanes and minions design, Battlerite instead offers up rough and tumble 3v3 skirmishes where the goal is to simply kill or be killed. Its heroes are great, its monetization model of cosmetics is fair, and its progression keeps you coming back for more. If you’re not yet playing Battlerite, you should be.
