We aim to misbehave in Rebel Galaxy

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Polygon met with Travis Baldree at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco for some stick time on his new game, Rebel Galaxy. Fans may recognize his name from games like Fate, Mythos, and maybe even the Torchlight series. Baldree is now in cahoots with Erich Schaefer, one of the co-founders of Blizzard North.

Rebel Galaxy, the first title from their new studio Double Damage Games, is set in space. Instead of slinging spells and swinging swords, it asks players to pilot massive capital ships. You'll make war on good and evil while making a name for yourself on the edge of the known universe.

It doesn't look anything like the action-RPGs for which the two are famous, but Baldree says it shares many of the same loot-driven mechanics as its predecessors. You can read more about it in our feature.

While we weren't able to capture video during our private, hands-on demo, the team at Double Damage were kind enough to share some video from the exact same build as the one we played. Join Polygon's Charlie Hall and Griffin McElroy as they travel the galaxy to meet interesting people — and blow them to smithereens.

Double Damage says that Rebel Galaxy will be out some time later this year, for both Mac, Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
