Slotomania Slot Machines New Year's Blast

I have tried playing the New Year's Blast and as usual I can't seems to move forward . Is there a trick to find the items?  I have tried previous blasts events and never made it past level 1. 

I can't afford to bu extra picks. I am on low income so any other suggestions would be great.
