58 years ago today we attempted to launch the first probe to Mars in the Mars 1M spacecraft. The goal was to investigate interplanetary space between Earth and Mars, return surface images from a flybys, and to learn about the effects of spaceflight on onboard instruments. Sadly Mars 1M was destroyed on takeoff.

On this day in 1990, the Magellan spacecraft began mapping Venus in the first multi-year orbital exploration of Venus. The first goal on arrival was to map 70% of the planet’s surface, after 1,792 completed orbits it finished on May 15, 1991 mapping 83.7% of the surface with a resolution between 101 and 250-meters/pixel. It later completed six other mapping cycles before completing its mission.
